Stroke Recovery Story & The Golden Period
In August 2024, Mr. Khoo experienced a left MCA ischemic stroke. After discharge, he was confined to bed for all daily activities, and his wife struggled to transfer him due to his weight of nearly 100 kg. The burden fell heavily on her, prompting their daughter to seek our physiotherapy services.
Our assessment revealed that while Mr. Khoo could understand speech, he had very weak movement in his affected limbs. He required maximum assistance for bed mobility and transfers, and could not stand or walk.
In the first session, we worked on strengthening in bed, sitting balance, and trunk control. Our immediate goal was to attempt a supported sit-to-stand. By the end of the session, Mr. Khoo was able to stand with minimal to moderate support — a significant breakthrough.
We also trained his wife in safe transfer techniques so she could assist him confidently at home.
Enable Mr. Khoo to stand and move independently.
Empower his wife with safe transfer techniques.
Maximize recovery during the golden rehabilitation period.
We incorporated PNF and Bobath techniques to activate movement and strengthen his affected side. Clear, achievable goals kept him motivated. Progression was step-by-step — from supported standing to standing with aids, and eventually standing without support. Walking followed the same path, advancing from assistance to supervision only.
After three months of dedicated rehabilitation, Mr. Khoo can now stand independently and enjoys morning walks with his wife. His story underscores the importance of the golden period — the first six months after a stroke, when the brain’s neuroplasticity is at its peak.
Act Fast & Early: Start physiotherapy as soon as possible to take advantage of neuroplasticity.
Be Consistent: Small, daily sessions are more effective than infrequent ones.
Empower the Family: Train caregivers to assist and encourage exercises at home.
Set Small Goals: Every small achievement builds confidence and momentum.
